Family Law Accredited Specialist An Accredited Specialist in Family Law is a lawyer who has been recognized for their expertise and proficiency in family law. This accreditation is a nationally recognised mark of excellence awarded by the Law Society of New South Wales (NSW). It is the highest level of specialisation that can be awarded to a family lawyer.

By maintaining exceptionally high professional standards and keeping on top of the latest legal developments, Accredited Specialists at Thornton + King ensure that they achieve the best possible outcomes for their family law clients.

What makes an Accredited Specialist in Family Law?

To be recognised as an Accredited Specialist in Family Law, a lawyer must have practised for at least 5 years, with no less than 3 years in family law. The lawyer must then undergo a series of structured peer to peer assessments with the Law Society of New South Wales and their Specialist Accreditation Board. The rigorous assessments conducted include mock client files, written examinations, interview panels, and reference checks, in order to truly test the skills and knowledge of the family law practitioner.

To retain their accreditation, an Accredited Specialist must re-apply every year and must demonstrate their commitment to keep up with the latest legal developments in family law by completing additional continued legal education training each year in family law, twice the amount required by a non-specialist family lawyer.

Family law specialist accreditation has only been awarded to approximately 1% of the practising solicitors in New South Wales.
